Growing Facades: Large Format Robotic Clay Printing for Bio-Integrated Architecture at ACADIA 2026, Humanism Recoded.

Delighted to act as mentor and co-lead alongside Rachael Henry & Tszyan Ng (Michigan), Nick LiCausi & Adam Marcus (Tulane) Oliver Perry & Dan Batty (HBBE, Newcastle) for this collaborative Workshop hosted by University of Michigan, Newcastle University (HBBE) and Tulane University.

The workshop brought together researchers working across architecture, digital fabrication and biotechnology to explore how robotically 3D-printed ceramic facade components could be designed to support biological growth. Designs were developed in Rhino and Grasshopper, prepared for clay printing and digitally fabricated using robotic extrusion at the University of Michigan FABlab. We prepared and coated modules with living algae biocomposites and exhibited several facade panels as part of the ACADIA conference at Laurence Technological University, Southfield and and Hudson’s, Detroit.
